Erdara

Erdara is a term used by the euskaldunak (bascophones, literally, “those which speak Basque”) to indicate the other languages of the world. With the Basque Country, will erdara it indicates mainly the language French E, the language Spanish E or the language Gascon.

He wants literally to say “language strange or foreign” and is not pejorative. Erdara has given erdaldun (“that which has a strange or foreign language”), just like will euskara gave euskaldun ( litt “that which has the Basque language”)

For as much the concept of erdaldun and that of euskaldun does not imply that the person in question is Basque or foreign. In fact the bascophones call erdaldun a Basque who does not speak will euskara and euskaldun with a person of nonBasque origin but which speaks the Basque language.

Although will erdara it are connected with all the other languages different from the will euskara , the Basque language is in linguistic liaison with French or Spanish only. This term is thus currently used like a synonym to indicate the two languages, i.e. the Spanish language in the part of the Basque Country which belongs to the Spain (Spanish Basque Country) and the French language in the part which belongs to the France (Basque Country French).

One finds the same Hebrew concept in , where lo' azit (לועזית) indicates in theory any other language that Hebrew (of לועז, lo' ez , " foreigner, not-Hebrew/Jewish not-Hebrew, not /non-Juif "), but which in practice indicates the Latin alphabet in general and the English in particular (language of the British mandate on the Palestine).
