Erasmus

Erasmus is the name given to the Programme of exchange of students and Enseignant S between the European Université S and universities . It is a subset of the program Socrates.

History

The Erasmus program was launched in 1987 with the participation of eleven countries. Of its creation until in 2007, the Erasmus program made it possible 1,5 million student S to take part in university exchanges between European countries partners.

Today, the countries concerned with the Erasmus program are the 30 countries of the European Economic space (EEE), that is to say the 27 Member States of the European Union as well as the Iceland, the Liechtenstein, the Norway, and the Turkey which is candidate with integration in the European Union. In 2005,145 000 students took part in the program, which accounts for 1% of the European population of this social group. The subsidy is of a hundred euros per month.

An extension of the Erasmus program called Erasmus mundus opened to all the countries of the world was implemented starting from back to university 2004/2005.

Origin of the name

The name of the program comes from the humanistic monk and theologist Dutch Érasme (15th century). This last travelled during many years through Europe to grow rich by the various cultures and to develop its humanism.

Budget

The budget planned over the period 2007-2013 is of 3,1 billion euros.
