History

It should initially be specified that, contrary to the idea spread abroad, the Senegaleses do not call their " national team; Lions of Téranga" , but rather " The Lions " very short, contrary to Cameroun (untameable Lions), in Morocco, (Lions of the atlas). The expression " Lions of Teranga" was used by the foreign press, as from the beginning of the year 2000, period which corresponds to a return to the foreground of the national team on the African scene after one decade 90 very morose. The addition of the word Téranga (which wants to say hospitality in Wolof and Sérère) comes probabement from the slogan used for the tourist promotion campaigns " Senegal, country of Téranga" (very known slogan abroad) and that the Senegaleses use them same to speak about their country. Moreover at the time of the African competitions of before 2000, the foreign sporting commentators used the expression " Lions of Sénégal". Today still, neither the national written press, neither Senegalese Internet sites most known (Seneweb, Rewmi, etc), nor the Senegalese supporters use the expression " Lions of Téranga". They indicate to them quipe national by the expression " Lions" or " Lions of Sénégal".

The team of Senegal knew her hour of glory by reaching the quarterfinals of the World cup 2002. Having beaten in match of opening the France world champion titrates some (1-0), made tie with the Denmark (1-1) and the Uruguay (3-3), then beaten the Sweden in 8th of finale (2-1, doubled of Henri Camara of which an equalization and a goal out of gold), the Senegal created sensation whereas it was its first participation in a world cup.
Arrived in quarterfinals, the Lions of Teranga as they are called could anything face the Turks and are inclined (0-1), goal out of gold boxed with the 94e minute, that is to say 4 minutes after the beginning of the prolongations. However, the objective of the team was achieved: to acquire a recognition on the international plan. The star offensive of the Lions of Téranga, El Hadji Diouf, finished in the 10 best players of this world cup.

At the beginning of year 2002, Senegal had lost finally Coupe of Africa vis-a-vis the Cameroun with the shootings with goal 2-3 after 120 minutes of play which had shown a virgin tie. During the competition, the Lions of Téranga had beaten Egypt (1-0), Zambia (1-0), Tunisia (0-0), the Democratic republic of Congo in quarter (2-0) and Nigeria in 1/2 finale (2-1 after prologations) before falling finally.

Unfortunately, Senegalese will never retouveront the form posted in 2001-2002. Their principal high-speed motorboats like El Hadji Diouf and Khalilou Fadiga will not confirm their promises. The team of Senegal will fail in her race for the qualification the World cup 2006 by finishing second of her group behind the Togo and will thus not go in Germany although the country does not miss potentialities like the Marseillais Mamadou Niang.

The attacker of Senegal El-Hadji Diouf is always regarded as the best Senegalese footballer of all times, it remains the major player of Senegal.
