It replaces since July 1992 the team of the CEI which itself replaced the team of the USSR in January 1992.

History

After a transition carried out by the team from the CEI (elimination with the first turn of the Euro 1992), it is the national team of Russia which took over the team of the USSR. Finished red shirt with the initials " celebrates it; CCCP" , Russia plays from now on in white or blue shirt.

However, the golden age of Russian football belongs to the past. The Russians qualify themselves for two world cups out of four (1994 and 2002), like two championships of Europe on three (1996 and 2004). Each time the experiment ends in an elimination without glory as of the first turn.

Contrary to the USSR which was pressed in particular on a tank of Ukrainian players and géorgiens, Russia has not enough talented players except certain exceptions like Aleksandr Mostovoï, Valeri Karpine or Oleg Salenko. This last, author of a new quintuplet at the time of the World 1994 vis-a-vis the Cameroun, and Co-better striker of the test with 6 goals, will never confirm the hopes placed in him.

Anxious of the bad results, the leaders of Russian football decided in 2006 to entrust the national selection to the Dutch trainer Guus Hiddink which carried out miracles out of world cup with the head of the teams of South Korea and of Australia.
