Equip with Portugal of Rugby to XV
The team of Portugal of Rugby to XV , called " Os Lobos" (Wolves, in French), gathers the best players of Rugby to XV of the Portugal under the patronage of the Fédération of Portugal of Rugby. It represents Portugal in major international competitions, like the World cup of Rugby to XV.
Its first official match dated April 13rd, 1935, against the Spain. Since, its team remained entirely constituted amateurs and thus it gained with surprised the Championnat European of the Nations in 2002.
Winner against the Uruguay in match of stopping, it will play in the group C in company of the New Zealand, the Scotland, the Italy and of the Romania during the World cup 2007. It is pulled by Tomaz Morais.
History
Origins of the team
Rugby settles in Portugal in the beginning of the year 1900 by French merchants and English which start by setting up small teams of district. But it has evil to be established in particular because of the economic and social problems which reign with the introduction of I Portuguese Republic, the participation in the First World War in France, and the footballistic field crop.
However, the development of Rugby persists and it is the April 13rd 1935 which the team of Portugal disputes its first official match, that it loses of a point against the Spain (5-6). The following year, it loses again against Spain by 16 points with 9.
It is thus with difficulties that the first international meetings begin from Portugal in Rugby with XV. However, this sport extends a little through the country while undergoing competition from certain federations like the Fédération of Portugal of football.
Period 1930 - 1965: Defeats in defeats
During more than 30 years the team of Portugal faces only the team of Spain, this one affirms her broad superiority during all the meetings between the two countries. It is the black period Portuguese Rugby which does not progress absolutely and even seems to have difficulties in maintain its team in competition against the Spaniards. Considered to be too weak, Portugal cannot dispute any official meeting with other countries. Spain does not leave any occasion to its adversary.
The Portuguese rugbystic culture remains always also low during this period and the population is completely satisfied by the results of its team.
Period 1966 - 1988: The revival
In 1966, the Portuguese team gains her first victory by 9 points with 3 against Spain. It is the beginning of new horizons for Portuguese Rugby.
The Portuguese play their first match against the Italy in 1967, losing 6-3, then against the Romania where they lose of 40 points. The results are not merry but the team of Portugal de Rugby starts to make known itself more largely with the international level. The following year, in 1968, it gains a victory against the Belgium and faces the Morocco for the first time before the Irish do not crush them by 132 to 0.
The meeting of 1970 against the Netherlands leads to a tie. In 1972, Portugal tears off no one against Italy (zero everywhere) then loses against the same team (9-6) in 1973. After some results mitigated during the remainder of the years 1970, Portugal manages to gain 5 matches between 1979 and 1981. It obtains no one against Spain in 1983 then continues its dash by gaining 7 victories of 1984 with 1985.
In 1987, the first world cup of Rugby to XV is organized but only on invitation, with the 16 best teams of the moment. Portugal thus remains spectator without being able to dispute the qualification.
Period 1989 - 2002: Attempts at qualifications
Of 1989 with 1991 are held the qualifications of the world cup of Rugby of 1991. The team of Portugal inclines itself vis-a-vis the Czechoslovakia 15 to 13 then it is eliminated from the qualifications by the Netherlands (32 to 3).
For the world cup of Rugby of 1995, Portugal is essential vis-a-vis Belgium and the Suisse but it loses against Spain. They thus face the Wales which crush them by 102 to 11. After a new defeat against Spain, Portugal is eliminated.
Portugal is invited to dispute the Challenge European 1998-1999 with his national team. It finishes in the last place of its group by losing all its matches.
The world cup of Rugby 1999 follows from there where Portugal beats all its adversaries except Spain and finishes second of its hen. Finally, the team of Portugal yields against the Scotland (85-11) and against Spain (21-17). It is eliminated from the qualifications by Uruguay in fishing out.
The qualifications of the world cup of 2003 are hardly more brilliant. Portugal is immediately eliminated from the phases of qualifications after having gained a match and having lost another.
In 2002 - 2004, the team of Portugal gains the Championnat European of the Nations. The March 21st 2004 in Ibiza, Portugal gains a historical victory over the team of Spain, adversary difficult for it (assessment of 5 victories, 1 no one and 19 defeats before this meeting), of the blow, it gains the Tournoi B and Spain is retrogressed in Tournoi C.
She loses one match, celebrates its first international trophy and the nomination of her trainer, Professor Tomaz Morais, like better trainer of the year of IRB.
Period 2004 - 2007: A first qualification for the world cup
For the first time of its history, Portugal qualifies itself for the world cup in 2007.
The national team asserts itself against the Uruguay in match of stopping. It is a beautiful revenge of the Portuguese on the Uruguyans who had eliminated them in 1999. The first match proceeds with Lisbon, on March 10th 2007 where Portugal carries it 12 to 5. The return match takes place with Montevideo on March 24th, with the qualification with the end, in spite of a defeat 18-12, thanks to the 7 points acquired in advance with the match outward journey.
Portugal will play in the group C in company of the New Zealand, the Scotland, the Italy and of the Romania.
