The team of Italy of football was head of series of the group E at the time of the Football world cup of 2006, group in which it found the team of the Ghana, of the the United States and the Czech Republic. At the time of the matches with direct elimination, Italy beat the Australia, the Ukraine then the Germany, before being crowned World champion, by beating the France finally with the Tirs with the goal.

Its first turn in the competition will be marked by a first encouraging victory vis-a-vis the Ghana (2-0) for then suffering in a match with electric environment against the the United States (1-1) (autogol of Zaccardo for the equalization of the Americans) and finally to impose itself rather easily in a match chopper vis-a-vis the Czech Republic (2-0).

The second period was however in favor of the French (although following frank blow Luca Toni gives the advantage to the Italians but its goal is cancelled because of a very doubtful off-side), just like the two prolongations which followed.
