History
1938-1992
This period of more than 50 years is the training of the Handball in France. All begins really on September 1st 1941 whereas the first French federation of handball to be created with Metz with like first president. For the first participation in the Championship of the world which is held in Sweden in 1954 with as foreman Maurice Chastanier player of SMUC Marseilles. First difficult participation with a last place this championship of the world shows the variation of the level as with the Germany or the Sweden. The next championship of the world is hardly better still a last place this time Ci in Germany. Starting from 1961 with 1992 sounds the years very difficult of the French handball.
Barjots 1992-2001
" Barjots" is the nickname of the team of France of handball which took part in the Olympic Games of Barcelona in 1992. The barjots gave to France its first medal in an international competition of handball.
This name corresponds to the period 1992-2001 and is allotted to the team of France and to the players who composed it. During this period, France gained:
-
1992 : bronze medal in Barcelona (Olympic Games)
- 1993: vice world champions
- 1995: world champions
- 1996: 4th with the OJ of Atlanta
The nickname of " Barjots" is due to the general frame of mind of the players which approached the competitions under always particular conditions, losing vis-a-vis accessible teams for then connecting definitely better matches vis-a-vis large teams. The players were also accustomed to celebrating titles or medals with haircuts very particular to one time when that was not current. Others practical such as the hazing for the new ones were frequent. Daniel Costantini does not stop there since in 2001, in front of its public, the team of France takes down a second crown obtained at the time of a memorable final for the French handball with an overheated public and a suspense out of the commun run.
The barjots medal-holders with the Olympic Games of Barcelona in 1992 are: Philippe Medard, Pascal Mahé, Philippe Debureau, Denis Lathoud, Denis Tristant, Gaël Monthurel, Eric Quintin, Jean-Luc Thiébaut, Philippe Keep, Thierry Perreux, Laurent Munier, Frederic Perez, Jackson Richardson, Stephan Stoecklin, Frederic Volle, Alain Portes.
The Barjots period was completed in 2001, succeeded a new period, that of the " to him; Costauds" , opened by the second championship of the world.
Strapping men
After the retirement of a large part of the generation of Barjots as well as selector of the time Daniel Costantini, the team of France must renew itself. It is the hour of the arrival of the new selector Claude Onesta and of the generation of the " costauds" as talented as that of their predecessors as testify to it, for example, that which much condisèrent like current the best guard of the world Thierry Omeyer or Nikola Karabatic.
The Championships of the following world also are very successful with two bronze medals in 2003 and in 2005. 2005, date with marked of a stone blanchepuisqu' it acts of the year of the international retreat of their glorious captain Jackson Richardson.
The Championships of Europe 2006 are the reward of completed work by Claude Onesta with the first victory of Blue in championships of Europe, more especially as on this occasion of new young talents were launched like Luc Abalo.
The revelation of this team could have led at the time of the Championships of the world 2007 or the Blue ones left among the favorites with a manpower of high-speed motorboats evolving/moving almost all in the German championship, best in the world. Unfortunately, France falls into the trap from the German public since the Blue ones will finish only with one 4th quite disappointing place because, amongst other things, of a very debatable semi-final in the field of the arbitration.
The hour is now with work for the Olympic Games and the Championnat of Europe of handball to come.
