History

The history of the national team is as tormented as that of the country.

Until the end of the Seventies, Afghanistan takes part in the competitions of football. In 1976, at the time of a famous match, Afghanistan succeeds in beating with Kabul the national team of Pakistan. The captain and striker are Ali Askar Lali. In 1980, Afghanistan is invaded by the Red Army . The Western countries in reprisals boycott the Olympic Games which are held the same year with Moscow. In lack of team, Soviet invites the Afghan national team then to take part in it. The players will refuse and take refuge in Germany. All gathered close to Dortmund, they will play from now on for a small club of the suburbs of this city. Will follow to Afghanistan, one period of war of resistance against Soviet. A national team in spite of is very reconstituted which takes part in September 2004 in the Asian Plays in China. After the departure of Soviet in 1989, the country is torn by a violent very practical civil war preventing football, then is followed by the integrist mode Taliban which even if it tolerates football (in pants!) does not allow the national team to reconstitute itself. With the fall of the latter, the Afghan federation of football reappears but without resource. The national team is reconstituted and will play several matches between 2002 and 2004 in the continental competitions with 3 very heavy defeats for her return to the competition in the Asian Plays in South Korea in 2002. April 16th, 2004, at the time of a match of benevolence in Italy against Vérone (series B), several players flee. Following this episode and various other difficulties, the national team is dismantled. Ali Askar Lali returns in 2004 to Afghanistan and with a trainer placed at the disposal by the German federation of football reconstitutes an multi-ethnic national team but almost without means, even not a correct ground of drive. It manages nevertheless to organize a return to the competition of the national team at Karachi for the championship of South Asia in December 2005: defeat against Maldives (1-9) and Pakistan (0-1) but victory against Sri Lanka (2-1).
