The Équipe cyclist Astana-Würth (become simply Astana for the end of season 2006) is an old Spanish formation cyclist , corresponding the former Once team, become Liberty Seguros in 2004 meanwhile.
History of the team
The team cyclist OUNCE is created in 1989. After 15 years marked by the many successes gained in particular by Laurent Jalabert, Alex Zülle, Erik Breukink, Johan Bruyneel, Ruiz Cabestany or Joseba Beloki, the team loses her partner, the Spanish lottery OUNCE, with the end of the year 2003.
Manual Saiz, manager of the team since her creation and owner via the company Activates Bay, finds a new partner then: the insurance company Liberty Seguros.
In 2005 the team is splashed by a first scandal: the October 27th whereas it has just gained the Tour of Spain 2005, Roberto Heras is declared positive with EPO.
The May 24th 2006, within the framework of a business of doping the Spanish police force stops several people of the world of the cycling of which Manolo Saiz the general manager of the team Liberty Seguros. The following day, the principal sponsor, the American insurer Liberty, then announces his immediate withdrawal of the team into full Tour with Italy. The leader of the team, Kazakh the Alexandre Vinokourov, not-implied in the business and eager to take part in the Tour de France, manages to mobilize several Kazakh companies which, in the form of the Astana consortium (of name of the capital of the Kazakhstan), Co-sponsorisent the team. This one becomes then in the course of season Astana-Würth (Würth being already before Co-sponsor of Liberty Seguros). The team however does not take part in the Turn, for lack of a number of runners suffisants.
The structure Activates Bay not seeing itself granting license ProTour for the season 2007, a new structure is created, of Swiss, sponsored right by the same Kazakh companies, under the name of Astana.
