Ephraim Katzir

Ephraim Katzir (born Ephraim Katchalsky the May 16th 1916 with Kiev, Ukraine) was the fourth President d' Israël of the April 10th 1973 with the April 19th 1978. He is an Israeli biophysicist originating in Ukraine. While it was at the university Harvard in America, the Workers party (Israel) then directed by Golda Meïr him candider for the president's function of the State proposed

It arrived in Palestine agent at the 9 years age in 1925. In 1933 finishes its studies licéales with the " Gymnasium hébraique" in the district Rehavya of Jerusalem. Its youth entered the rows of the Hagana, the Jewish main movement of defense armed in Palestine. Then took share with the War of Indépendence of Israel being the commander of a unit of the scientists. Biochemistry with the Hebraic Université of Jerusalem studied where in 1951 became professor. Between 1966-1968 chief of the Israeli Ministry of defense was the scientific adviser. He is prize winner of the Prix of Israel, (1959), of the Prix Rothschild (1961), of the gold medal Linderstrom-Lang, the Prix of Japan (1985) for his research in the field of the Biotechnologie. Major events which took place during its presidency were the Guerre of Kippour in 1973, the Raid of Entebbe in 1976, the installation with the capacity of the nationalist coalition - liberal of Menahem Begin and the historical visit of the Egyptian president Anwar Sadat in Israel in November 1977. It renonça has to be elected for the second time chair State because of the disease of his Nina wife.
