Entomology

The entomology is the branch of the Zoologie whose object is the study of the Insecte S.

The applications of entomology are varied:

  • Agriculture and Sylviculture,
  • breeding of the domestic insects:
  • ecology, in particular for the determination of the IBGN (total biological Index standardized)
  • Medicine human and veterinary (fight against the insects parasite S - Parasitology - and vectors of infectious illness),
  • Legal medicine (determination of the hour of death, the causes of the death, etc),
  • industry (developed and Insecticidal production of the S, protection of the foodstuffs and the sawlog),
  • construction (fight against the Termite S).

At the 18th century, the study of the insects became a subject with the mode following work of large scientists, in particular those of Réaumur. At the 19th century, it was of good tone to have collections naturalists, in particular of insects, mainly of the butterflies and Coléoptère S. But the discovery of a led number increasingly larger of species and the complexification of knowledge, starting from the beginning of the 20th century, with the quasi-disappearance of this practice. Of course, other factors, like the evolution of the nature of the leisures or the urbanization, took part in this phenomenon. Today, the practice of entomology amateur, even if it remains a rather rare activity, tries to be directed towards the protection of the species rather than the simple accumulation of dried animals. One can also announce the success which the Terrariophilie knows.
