In the universe Fiction nel of the Ground of the Medium of Tolkien, the Ents (“giant” in old English, language translating that of the Rohirrim in the Lord of the Rings ), also called Onodrim or Enyd (in Sindarin) is the spirits of the forest and probably forms part of the oldest people of the Ground of the Medium. They were created by Ilúvatar following a suggestion of Yavanna, creative of the things which push, saddened to see his/her children not being able to defend oneself against the other people of the Ground of the Medium.

The entic language is different from all the others: slow, sound, repetitive and very moderate, so that anybody of other that themselves cannot speak it. The Elfes learned how in Ents to speak their language in order to be able to communicate with them. Ents, very gifted in the training of any language, showed a particular affection for the Quenya.

Though not being warriors, they have as a role to protect the forests from the Ground of the Medium of the Orque S or other invading creatures. However, at the end of the Third Age, Ents do not remain any more but in the forest of Fangorn (at the border of the Rohan). They quickly do not make decisions and are rather slow, but can be frightening adversaries (in particular against the tower of Saroumane).

They do not reproduce any more because the Ents-Women started from Fangorn to settle in the Brown Grounds, on the other side of the Anduin. The reason is a divergence of centers of interest, the males preferring to devote itself to the walks in forest while discussing with the trees, whereas the females left the forest to sow the still virgin grounds of all plants. They disappeared at the end from the Second Age, following burned the ground policy practiced by Sauron.

Ent Sylvebarbe accommodates the Hobbit S Pippin and Merry, which decides it to act against Saroumane.
