Enrico Dandolo

Enrico Dandolo is the 41e Doge de Venise, elected in 1192, at the 82 years age.

It is one of the major actors of the IVe crusade, and its policy ensured the domination of Venice on several territories of the Eastern basin of the Mediterranean: Venice became a European and maritime great power.

It made take Zara by the Crusaders for the account of Venice, then it pushed them on Constantinople. After the catch of this city by the Crusaders, he refused, says one, the crown which was offered to him; but it was made elect despotic Romanie, obtained for the republic of Venice a district of Constantinople and the islands of the Archipelago, bought Candie, which had fallen in division with the duke of Montferiat, and brought to Venice a crowd masterpieces of art, including four horses of Saint-Marc, removed with the Greek empire.

He died one year after (1205) in Constantinople even. In 1173, the Greek emperor Manuel had made him burn the eyes when it had come, in the name of the republic of Venice, to require deputies of him that this prince retained; this torment weakens its sight, but did not make him lose it completely.

A funerary stele bearing its name is visible in the western gallery of the old basilica Holy-Sophie with Istanbul.

The branch of Dandolo currently living in France goes down directly from the doge Andréa Dandolo. Established in Picardy, this family belongs to the Italian aristocracy and carries the title of count.
