Ennio Antonelli

Ennio Antonelli (born the November 18th 1936 with Todi, in the Province of Perugia, in Ombrie -) is an Italian monk, named cardinal in 2003 by the Pape Jean-Paul II, and which is current the Archevêque of Florence, since 2001.

Biography

Ennio Antonelli followed studies to the regional Séminaire pontifical of Assise, then with the Grand Roman pontifical seminar. It obtains a license in Théologie with the pontifical Université of Lateran and a control in traditional Lettres and Philosophie with the Université of State of Perugia.

It is ordered priest the April 2nd 1960 and exerts the functions of vice-rector and professor, then vice-chancellor of the seminar of sound Diocèse. Of 1968 with 1983, it teaches the dogmatic Théologie with the regional seminar of Sat and the Histoire of art in the institutes of higher learning of Assise and Deruta.

The May 25th 1982, Ennio Antonelli is named bishop of Gubbio, and it receives the episcopal dedication the August 29th. In this function, it builds the new seminar of the diocese, the pastoral center diocesan as well as a house for the clergy. It occupies this load during six years, before being transferred to the seat archiépiscopal from Perugia - Città della Pieve (October 6th 1988).

The May 25th 1995, he becomes secretary of the Italian Episcopal conference, within which he had in particular collaborated for the development of the new version of the Catéchisme for adults. It is confirmed in this function in 2000. It takes part in the assembly of the synod of the bishops for Europe in 1999 and collaborates in the preparation of the Jubilé of the year 2000.

During the meeting of the general secretaries of the European Episcopal conferences, which was held in 1999 in Croatia, the intervention of Mgr Antonelli about an initiative - impetus from the point of view of the Jubilee - by the Italian Episcopal conference made great noise. He explained why the Italian bishops had proposed the acquisition of shares of the Foreign debt of one or more Pays in the process of development, part of the debt being thus cancelled thanks to the sum obtained through the purchase of shares.

Mgr Antonelli is named by Jean-Paul II archbishop of Florence the March 21st 2001, to succeed the Cardinal Silvano Piovanelli, reached by the age limit. It is created cardinal at the time of the Consistoire of the October 21st 2003. He becomes member of the pontifical councils for the laic ones and the social communications.
