In Informatique, the term routing indicates the mechanism by which the data of equipment shipper are conveyed to their recipient, even if none of both knows the complete way that the data will have to follow. To have an effective procedure of routing is particularly important for the decentralized networks.
All the apparatuses connected to Internet contain a table of routing .
One distinguishes two types of nodes of the réseau :
- the hosts who can be an only shipper or recipient of a message
- the footbridges, which transmit messages between at least two networks
Static and dynamic routing
The tables of routings can be configured into hard on the router, one speaks then about " routing statique". They can also be updated automatically and dynamically, it is the " routing dynamique".
Protocols of routings
Maintenance of tables of routings of routers important being able to be reasonably carried out manually (even if it is protected), one defined protocols of routing allowing to exchange information of routing between the routers. IGP are protocols functioning inside an autonomous system. These protocols function in various ways:
- they can exchange only the changes in the tables of routing like the protocol OSPF.
- they can also exchange all the table of routing like the protocol RIP or IGRP
- or an hybrid of both as EIGRP which exchange the totality of the tables of routing as soon as there is modification of the one of them.
The current trend is to transfer, with the router more known, the data for which the “close” router most suitable is unknown. That confers an architecture “smallworld” on Internet, at the same time powerful and sufficiently robust. See also the concepts of bridge and footbridge which it is advisable not to confuse with the router.
Examples of protocols of routings (all used for the routing IP):
- Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
- Routing Information Protocol (RIP)
- Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)
- Integrated Intermediate System to Intermediate System (Integrated IS-IS)
