Enguerrand IV of Coucy

Enguerrand IV of Coucy (born in 1228 - † 20 March 1311), lord de Coucy, lord of Marle, Fère, Crépy and Vervins.

Biography

Wire junior by Enguerrand III, he becomes lord of Coucy with died of his/her brother Raoul II occurred at the time of the Bataille of Mansourah, in Egypt during the Seventh crusade in 1250.
Man lout, violent one and, found guilty in 1256 of arbitrary executions, he was imprisoned then judged by the king Louis IX which withdraws its rights of high justice to him and condemns it to pay a fine of: 12500 pounds, to found three vaults and to serve during three years in Holy Land.

Enguerrand Marie with Marguerite, the girl of the count Otton II of Gueldre († 1271) and of Marguerite de Clèves († 1251), but it does not have a child of this first marriage.

Become widowed, it remarie in 1288 with Jeanne, oldest daughter of Robert de Béthune, count de Flandre, and of Yolande of Burgundy († 1280), countess of Nevers.

He dies in 1311 and is buried with the abbey of the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Longpont at Marie d' Oisy and of Montmirail, his mother.

Some time after the death of her husband, Jeanne withdraws herself in the Cistercian abbey of Sauvoir, with the foot of the mountain of Laon, and she dies there abbess, the October 15th 1334.

Enguerrand IV not leaving a heir, the powerful seigniory of Coucy passes then between the hands of its nephew Enguerrand V. This last, wire of Arnoul III of Guines and Alix de Coucy, is the first representative of the second house of Coucy. Itself and his/her son, Guillaume  I {{er}}, are almost unknown in-outside few mentions in official texts.
