In fact the Chinese invented the Papier and the techniques of the print and the Imprimerie several centuries before paper does not arrive to Europe. The techniques of engraving are very related to the support, because this one must be not very expensive so that the use of an original recopiable is interesting. The seals leaving a print in wax and engravings being used to create coins are examples of engravings carried out on supports other than paper.
Engraving is considered, with the Architecture, the Peinture, the Sculpture, the Musique and the Danse, like one of the fine art, although this classification fell a little in disuse.
Engraving appeared at the 15th century: the Italian Maso Finiguerra found, in 1452, the means of taking print from a plate which it had engraved for the Midsummer's Day church with Florence. Engraving developed much with the Renaissance, with artists like Andrea Mantegna, Baccio Baldini, Botticelli, Antonio del Pollajuolo, Francesco Francia.
The invention of the etching is allotted to Wenceslas d' Olmütz (1496). François Mazzuoli used it for the first time in Italy about 1530, Albrecht Dürer in Germany towards 1540.
The impact of engraving on the diffusion of the Art and the Science is extraordinary as of the 17th century. The illustration S of the Encyclopedia of Diderot and D' Alembert show how much this art contributed to popularize the Culture.
Since the 19th century, engraving was used with manufacture as postage stamps, of banknotes and musical partitions.
Le engraver often affixes his Signature there.
