Historical context

England as a political entity ceased existing with the Acte of Union (1707). Were based then a Patriotisme and an identity British, built primarily around the imperial “mission” - thus, England was probably the only European nation not to know of real nationalism to the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. “English” and “British” a long time remained virtually Synonyme S, in England as for the rest of the world.

The rise of the nationalisms Welsh and Scottish, crowned by the restoration of the Scottish Parliament and the creation of the National Assembly of Wales (1997-1999), contributed to the weakening of the British identity, called in question British equation the “= English” and plunged England in a “crisis of very mediatized identity”.

The institutional upheaval caused by the introduction of these two rooms to the very different capacities (and for which it would be necessary to add the assembly of Northern Ireland) created a series of overall unfavourable constitutional anomalies in England, not to be only equipped with a national representation. Indeed, the worker government of Tony Blair preferred to him the way of the regional decentralization, started earlier by the Conservatives under John Major.

English nationalism was also influenced by the Protestant Réforme, from where the traditional attachment with the Église of England and the charges of Papisme against the Challenging S faithful to Rome.

Political orientation

  • England being deprived of clean political scene, the political parties of any edge preserved a speech Unioniste and a British imagery, and this more especially as English nationalism remains still a current minor.
  • If English nationalism more easily seems to make receipt among the preserving opinion, it also has its defenders on the left, like David Blunkett with the Workers party. The question remains very discussed, the words “English nationalist” still evoking for much the violence of the Hooligans and the racism of extreme right-hand side.
  • On the right, it is not rare to see English nationalism côtoyer the Euroscepticisme
