English Wikipédia

Wikipédia in English is the edition of Wikipédia in English language. First edition of Wikipédia launched the January 15th 2001, it reached a million articles in March 2006. It is since its most important creation by the number of articles. It counted approximately 50% of all the articles in 2003, but its importance compared to the other languages is decreasing.

First edition

English Wikipédia was the first edition of Wikipédia to be appeared and remained since its most important creation. Consequently, of many conventions, rules and characteristics established by this edition were taken again thereafter by the other editions of Wikipédia. It is in particular the case of the articles of quality, the neutrality from point of view, the models of navigation, the categorization of the articles to the state of outline, the recourse to the Médiation and the Arbitrage to solve the conflicts between participants, and finally of the weekly groupwares.

The most active participants within the Wikimedia Foundation, as well as the developers of MediaWiki, the software which makes turn Wikipédia, are for good number also present on the version of Wikipédia in English language.

Encountered problems

Among the problems encountered in English Wikipédia, one finds the question of knowing which regional alternative English to adopt it, the possible options being the American English, the British English or the international English . The Chinese edition encountered a similar problem, which however was solved in a different way.

Participation of the people of native tongue other than English

Because of the prevalence of English to the international level and importance of English Wikipédia, it is with this edition that contribute of many people whose Native tongue is not English.

It also happens that these people rather seek information in English Wikipédia than in that, less packed, of their native tongue.

It also happens that the english-speaking complain about grammatical and syntactic errors made by contributors controlling only imperfectly English. However, the speakers of English native tongue playing the part of corrector, it is born thus from collaborations which give often satisfactory results.
