English BASIC

See also: BASIC

English BASIC (for British American Scientific International Commercial ) is a very restricted subset (850 words) of the English language which forms in oneself a new language (entirely compatible with normal English and according to whether rules coming without modification from the English language) so adaptable which it was possible to translate completely and accurately the Bible (in addition to many other works) into English BASIC.

This language is the fruit of the work of Ogden vigorously assisted by Richards and Graham. Its name is without relationship with the computer programming language called BASIC.

Part of work on the BASIC was carried out at the university of Harvard which published important works (books, films, sound recordings, etc) for its diffusion.

The bases of the BASIC are:

  • the General BASIC English Dictionary , providing the most 40.000 directions of more than 20.000 English words (normal) completely redefined by using only words of the BASIC (publication under the direction of Ogden)

  • The BASIC Dictionary off Science , also published (by using only the 850 words of the BASIC to define 25  000 scientific terms and expressions) by Graham.

and various didactic works explaining extremely simple grammar, the use of the intentionally restricted vocabulary (Ogden thought initially of 500 words only) to give quasi unlimited possibilities of expression, the extensions standardized (doubling, by taking them all, the vocabulary) for special uses, for example religious terms, etc

One of these most interesting works nowadays still is:

  • The Pocket Book off BASIC English , equivalent of the title English through Pictures of Richards and Christine Mr. Gibson. The two works are practically identical. The first title was the subject of several publications, with or without multilingual assistances (recommendations of use, lists of vocabulary with transliteration of the pronunciation language by language), in book of pocket and treats approximately the 500 major words of the BASIC and the linguistic method while making use only of the image. The second title is the same publication in the context of work at the university of Harvard. It is then accompanied by books of work of application and discs.

Some of these works are exhausted and must be consulted in libraries.
