Engineer-Master

Engineer-Master is a title decreed by the academic institute professionnalized (IUP), entitled by a National Commission and on a proposal from a jury which decides within sight of the whole of the formation achieved by a student (decree n°92-84 of January 23rd, 1992)

Who delivers this diploma?

Only the establishments of higher education entitled by the national council of higher education and research (CNESER) can decree the title of engineer-Master. This enabling is delivered by a National Commission made up of teacher-researchers and professionals qualified (named by ministerial decree). This university/professional duality is one of the characteristics of the IUP and is found in the composition of the jury which decrees the title. This one must be made up, with parity, of teacher-researchers and personalities qualified because of their community activity.

Which differences with the title of Engineer?

Historically, the purpose of the trainings of engineer-Masters were to train university engineers in fields then forsaken by the traditional schools, in particular to train graduates ready to hold of the uses of framing. In practice, the engineer-Masters occupy today appreciably the same functions as the engineers. The title of engineer-Master has specificities all the same:

It is obtained exclusively within a IUP
It sanctions professionnalized studies (strongly centered on the needs for the companies)
It is associated with a diploma of control

Why it is gradually abandoned?

Because of the reform of LMD. Before the reform, the title of engineer-Master was associated with a diploma of Maîtrise, which clearly dissociated it from its counterpart, the title of Engineer. But since the aforementioned reform, the majority of the IUP (83,2%) were aligned with the system LMD by shifting the one year training cycle, to arrive at the level Master (Vat +5). The difference between the title of Engineer and that of engineer-Master thus becomes less obvious and the relevance to keep two close titles brought much universities to the abandonment of this diploma. In 2003, the Minister for education declared " In this context, it is not necessary then more to deliver the title of engineer-maître". Let us note however that at the time of the drafting of this article, diplomas for the occupation of engineer-Master was still delivered.

The epilog

Aligned from now on with the traditional university formations and the schools of engineers, the assembly of the directors of IUP decided to replace the title of engineer-Master by a charter quality, the " IUP" label; , to dissociate other formations, and " to identify clearly respecting the principles founders of IUP".
