Engine TRIGA Mark I of Billingham
The Réacteur TRIGA Mark I of Billingham is located in the Comté of Durham on the site of the company Imperial Chemical Industries (HERE)
History
HERE exploited a small nuclear reactor TRIGA of the type Mark I built by General Electric in its factory of Billingham Of 1971 with 1988.On the same site, HERE exploited at the same time a coal center on banks of the river Tees for its requirements in électricité.
These installations were unused in 1988. The site of the power station became " Billingham Reach Industrial Estate", an international quay pertaining to Whitebait the U.K. Limited.
HERE does not exploit any more its factory of Billingham since the sale of most of the activities because of a Restructuration in 1990. Some old installations of the site are still in exploitation by other companies chimiques.
In 1983, NIREX proposed to use the unused anhydrite mine of Billingham to deposit the nuclear waste of average activity. This caused an enormous outcry because the mine is located very close to an urban center. The proposal was abandoned.
