Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson statesman Swedish regent of the kingdom of 1435 with 1436.
Engelberkt Engelbrektsson born about 1390 was an owner of mines in Dalécarlie he became the chief of the popular revolt of the minors and the Swedish peasants against the oppression of the Danish royal administration in particular out of tax matter, personified by Jösse Eriksson the Baillif of Västeras.
Disorders burst since 1432 and at the beginning of 1434 it degenerated into general revolt. After having presented the complaints of the inhabitants of the Dalécarlie to the king Eric de Poméranie, it takes the head of revolted this province. In spite of the support of the Thomas bishop of Strängnäs it is given up by the noble ones and must conclude an armistice with the capacity in November from the same year.
Engelbrekt in January 1435 convenes with Arboga an assembly to which belong not only the bishops and the noble ones but also the representatives of the cities and the peasants. This assembly regards itself as a Riksdag (i.e Parlement of Sweden) and elects Engelbrekt as regent of the country. Extremely of this popular support this last starts the combat against the royal forces and occupy the south of the Sweden the king who does not control any more that 4 fortified towns whose Stockholm and Kalmar must treat. If it will continue to perceive the taxes, it gives up the continuation of its interior policy and yields Örebro in stronghold to the regent.
The war begins again in spring 1436 but Engelbrekt is assassinated the May 4th 1436 in an island of the lake Hjämar by noble Magnus Bengtsson.
