Engagement

The engagement are for a couple a declaration of intent of marriage. The term of engagement indicates the day of this declaration, as well as the time which separates the aforementioned day from that of the marriage. It is not inevitably a religious act, and a engagement ring matéralise often this decision.

In French Civil law

The Civil code French of 1804 does not consider the engagement . A promise of Mariage would be contrary with the freedom of (not) marrying. Until the marriage is marked, the engaged couples thus keep whole freedom not to marry.

The circumstances of the rupture of engagement can however cause a damage entitled to compensation on the basis of article 1382. Indeed, to announce the marriage day before which one gives up can be regarded as a fault (act that would not make a normally careful and diligent person) causing a damage. The damage can be moral or material (Traiteur to be paid, invited to countermand…). One returns here in the chapter concerning the civil responsibility.

In the tradition

In general, it is a promise of marriage for a marriage approximately two years afterwards.

Engagement is not necessarily a religious act. Many people not believing practice this rite, often become a family tradition.

Engagement often gives place to a festival for which the two families gather.

In the Catholic tradition

Engagement constitutes a stage towards the marriage. They mark the starting of a reflection of the couple towards final engagement. This engagement is done traditionally in front of the families and can give place to a blessing according to a Rituel established. This blessing can take place during a Mass in which take part the families of the one and other. It can also be given during an office in a parochial community with or without the participation of the family of been engaged.

It is after this first step towards the marriage, that the new ones been engaged consider a Préparation with the catholic marriage.

The engagement ring

To this occasion, been engaged gives, to France and in other countries, a ring, signs of its love. It goes by been engaged to annular of the left hand. In general the ring is a ring with one or more stones (often a diamond).

To the United States like in the United Kingdom and Germany, both been engaged can carry an engagement ring to the left hand.

To Brazil, promised in marriage future alliances recover mutually from their marriage, each one engraved internally with the first name of the engaged couple or the future wife. Each of both the door then to annular of the right hand until the day of their marriage, as a sign of their engagement and their love.
