Engadine

The Engadine (in réto- Romanche, Engiadina or Engadina ) is an area of Switzerland located at the south east of the country in the Canton of the Grisons. It is delimited by the Austrian border and the Maloja. It is crossed by the Inn, an affluent of the the Danube. The most known village of Engadine is Saint-Moritz.

With its population speaking the Romanche (approximately 25000 people), she dissociates remainder of the Grison oberland and stretches herself on approximately 80 kilometers. She is divided into two parts according to the cluse of Brail:

  • High-Engadine ( Engiadin' Removed ) the

  • Low-Engadine ( Engiadina Bassa ) the

High-Engadine

The area is mountainous with glaciers and several lakes (Lac of Sils, Lac of Silvaplana, Lac of Saint-Moritz). Forests of larches cover the zone. The climate is cold and constitutes one of most rigorous of Switzerland, the temperature goes down sometimes in lower part from -35 degrees in winter. The valleys High-Engadine belong to the highest inhabited areas of Europe.

Low-Engadine

The area is more wild than the Highone with throats and narrow valleys.

Engadine knew to preserve its natural resources. It is known for the richness of its fauna and its Flore. One also finds many there mineral.

Are to be seen the villages of Guarda and Ardez (inheritance of UNESCO).
