Encephalopathy of Wernicke
The Encéphalopathie of Wernicke (or Gayet-Wernicke ) is a severe central nervous system disorder characterized by the short-term loss of memory.
It results from a deficiency in Thiamine (B1 Vitamin), accompanied by a repeated absorption of Hydrocarbure S.
The most common cause is the Alcoolisme, but other circumstances, like an unbalanced mode, can start the disease.
Encephalopathy causes disorders occulo-engines (Nystagmus), Paralysie S of the eyes with Diplopie, impossibility for the patient of swallowing, disorders of balance, Ataxie, Confusion, short-term loss of memory.
In a rarer way, one finds also a Hypothermie, a orthostatic Hypotension. If encephalopathy is not treated, it can degenerate and involve a Coma, becoming a medical emergency. It becomes complicated sometimes Syndrome of Korsakoff.
The treatment consists in injecting, by intravenous or intramuscular way, of the thiamin amounts. If the syndrome is diagnosed early and that the patient is treated correctly, a fast and complete re-establishment is possible.
