Empoisonneuse

The Empoisonneuse , ( Poison Ivy ), of its true name Pamela Lilian Isley is a character of fiction of cd. Comics and an enemy of Batman. It was created by Robert Kanigher and its first appearance is in Batman #181 (June 1966).

After his first appearance, the character was, at the beginning, very little used by the authors. It did not make major appearance until the rise of the Féminisme, which brought the need to put in scene a greater number of unpleasant female in the series. Empoisonneuse was used to replace the Catwoman, which became more and more sympathetic nerve, for the role of the female antagonist of Batman. As from this moment, it was more frequently used in the series of the comics of Batman and in the group of Suicide Squad, and was especially popularized by the series Batman, the animated series.

History of the character

Before the Crisis

Dr. Pamela Lillian Isley was a promoteuse botanist coming from Seattle. She was allured by Marc LeGrande to assist it for a flight of an object of the old civilization Égyptienne which contains old grasses. Marc LeGrande, fearing that Pamela denounces it with the authorities, tries to poison it with the grasses mortals intraçables. Pamela survives the attempted murder and discovers that it acquired an immunity with all the natural toxins and diseases.

After the Crisis

After the Crisis, the origins of Empoisonneuse were revised. Pamela Isley grew with a rich person distant family. At the university, she studied in the field of botany and advanced biochemistry. One of these professors was Dr. Jason Woodrue, known under the name of Alec Holland. Isley was a timid girl and was easily allured by its professor. Woodrue thus started to make experiments on Isley while injecting into its body of the poisons and toxins. These experiments caused in Isley a chemical and physical conversion of its body; it failed to die twice because of the poisons which had been injected to him. These experiments made him lose the reason: it started to treat the plants like her own children. During this time, Woodrue escaped the authorities, by leaving Pamela to the hospital for six months. Mad by the treason and the abandonment of Woodrue, the young woman will suffer psychologically: she undergoes oscillations of mood, at one time she is nice and soft, at another time she is violent and cruel. It ended up leaving the school and Seattle to be found with Gotham City.

The year of the first appearance of Batman, Empoisonneuse takes the city as an hostage while threatening to release a poison in the town air if nobody answers his ransom demands. It will be stopped by Batman and will be locked up in the asylum of Arkham. As from this moment, it becomes obsessed by the bat, because it is the only person whom it cannot control or influence.

Later, Empoisonneuse acknowledges that it began a life of crime only to have money and to find a place in the world where it would be alone with the plants without being disturbed by Humanity. A few years afterwards, it leaves Gotham to go to live on a deserted island of the the Caribbean. It transforms this place into a second Éden, where it is happy for the first time of its life. But its happiness will be of short duration, because an American company decided to test its weapons on the island which she believed abandoned. The island was destroyed and Isley is turned over to Gotham to be avenged by punishing the persons in charge. After being stopped by Batman, it took the resolution to leave the city only if one day the plants escape the threat from the men. Since, it devotes its life to " purifier" Gotham City.

One day, Pamela is released from the asylum of Arkham by two women, Holly and Eva, which bring it to their employer. She discovers with displeasure that it is about Flonoric Man, her former professor who helped it to leave Arkham. The professor does not resemble one human any more, because the only part of the human body which remains of Jason Woodrue is its head.

The two gangsters make alliance, Isley gives a sample of sound DNA to Woodrue and in exchange, this one must pay a complete cash truck. The objective of Woodrue is to create a " enfant" with the DNA and to create an economy based on the sale of Marijuana surpuissante. The goal being that the worldwide economy is directed by drug and that these " enfants" control this economy. Batman intervenes, but it is captured by Holly and Eva. On the other hand, Isley betrays Flonoric Man and releases Batman so that it fights the criminal. Flonoric Man is finally captured and Isley escapes with the money.

No Man's Land

When Gotham City is destroyed by an earthquake, Isley takes the control of the Park Robinson and transforms it into tropical paradise. She lives with sixteen children who became orphan after the earthquake. Empoisonneuse had sympathy to these orphan children and it protects them from the city which is in a state of " No Man' S Land".

During the winter, it is attacked by Gueule of clay (Basil Karlo), which imprisons Empoisonneuse in a room located under the park. Thereafter, with the assistance of Batman, it succeeds in overcoming clay Gueule. After the combat, it makes an agreement with Batman: it keeps the children in the park and sends fresh fruit and vegetables for the survivors of the earthquake.

A little later Isley meets Harley Quinn, which was brutally attacked by the Joker. Empoisonneuse looks after it and the two criminal ones become large friends.

After the reopening of the city, the council wants to take again the park and to send Isley to the asylum of Arkham, because they support the idea badly that an ecological terrorist controls part of the city. Moreover, they think, wrongly, that the orphans are hostages. The department of police force threatens to use a powerful weedkiller to kill all the plants, which would kill Empoisonneuse and would also be likely to make evil with the children. Isley refuses to leave the park and chooses to become a martyrdom. But orphan, Rose, is poisoned by accident, and Empoisonneuse goes to the authorities to save the life of the young girl.

Silence

Later, it is handled by the Sphinx and Silence. During this history, it takes the mental control of Superman and Catwoman. Later, the Sphinx approaches Isley to require of him to protect it from Silence which continues it. Empoisonneuse rather decides to be avenged for the handling which it underwent.

A little later Isley believes that its capacities kill the orphans whom it had under his load during the No Man's Land and requires of the assistance to Bruce Wayne to become again human. Thereafter, it is let convince by Silence to take another serum to restore its capacities and to die during the procedure. It is what it does. But its death was of short duration.

One year later

In the scenario One Year Later , it is revealed that Isley survived handling of Silence. Moreover, its control on fauna increased. Also, it seems to have begun again its crusade against the companies which do not respect the environment and which destroy fauna and the flora in the name of the money.

Batman, the animated series

In Batman, the animated series , Empoisonneuse is incarnated by Diane Pershing. With its first appearance, she wants to assassinate Harvey Dent, which built a prison on the last habitat of a species of very rare flower. In Gotham Knights its appearance completely changed: she resembles a plant more. Moreover, it develops a very great friendship with Harley Quinn.

Batman & Robin

Uma Thurman plays the part of Empoisonneuse in the film Batman & Robin . Isley is transformed by the insane scientist who was his employer and brutally killed it in the laboratory. But she survived the attack and is avenged by killing her former owner. Thereafter, it leaves the laboratory with Bane to go to Gotham City. Quickly, it joins Mr. Freeze to destroy the city. It is overcome by Batgirl and it is found with the asylum of Arkham in company of Mr. Freeze who had discovered his treason on the attempted murder of Nora Fries.

The Batman

Piera Coppola is the voice of Empoisonneuse in the animated series of The Batman . In this series, it is a young activist environmental, friendly of Barbara Gordon. She succeeds in convincing Barbara to help it for her protest against a polluting company. But actually, its intention was to carry out a mission of observation for a mercenary of the name of Temblor. During the attack and the combat between Temblor and Batman, a mutant plant falls on it. Later, it awakes in the ambulance and it starts to express powers to control of the plants. It thus begins a career of ecoterrorist. It will be stopped by Batman and Batgirl.

Empoisonneuse appeared in the majority of the video games of Batman.
