Empfindsamkeit

The literary time of the Empfindsamkeit (see Piétisme) extends from 1740 with 1780. It is current in reaction to the rational oppression of the feelings exerted by the Lumières. Its origin is mainly nun. Linguistically, Empfindsamkeit finds its expression through its turning and the neologism which intensifies the expression of the feelings. The time is strongly influenced in the expression of the feelings for nature by works of Rousseau (1712-1778). The sentimental epistolary novel Pamela (1740) of Samuel Richardson had a large literary influence. The German poets of this time were Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (1724-1803), Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (1715-1769) and Sophie Of the Rock (1730-1807) which was the first epistolary auteure of German novel.

Empfindsamkeit prepares the time of the Sturm und Drang. The topics of Empfindsamkeit are reinforced in this current, such as for example the bringing together of the literary worlds by the receivers of the every day. Sturm und Drang replaces the time of Empfindsamkeit; in the daily newspaper of certain circles of reading, the thought of Empfindsamkeit played a considerable part until the 19th century.
