Emmylou Harris , born the April 2nd 1947 with Birmingham (Alabama), is a American Chanteuse of rock'n'roll and Country - Rock.
Biography
Its beginnings
It finished its studies at the university of North Carolina in Greensboro. At that time it was very influenced /int éressée by the music of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.She married Tom Slocum in 1969 and recorded the album Gliding Bird the following year. She then crossed a difficult period with the bankruptcy of the company of disc which distributed its discs and the rupture of its marriage. Of its first marriage, it had a girl, Hallie.
Its career
In 1971, whereas she plays in trio with local musicians, she is located by members of the group Flying Burrito Brothers, among them Chris Hillman (ex Byrds) which had dealt with this group after the departure of Gram Parsons. Hillman initially thinks of proposing in Emmylou to join Flying Burrito Brothers, but finally it recommends it to Gram Parsons, in 1972, so that it takes part in the recording of its first album. Its career really starts.Emmylou makes the round of the group of Parsons, then takes part in the recording of its second album Grievous Angel . The September 19th, 1973, Gram Parsons is found died in its hotel room, its death is due to an excess of drugs and alcohol.
Later, it records several songs of Gram Parsons, in particular Luxury Liner and She on the album “Luxury Liner”
It continues its career with the Canada with its producer and new husband Brian Ahern (with whom it has another girl, Meghann). It produces its first album in 1975 off entitled Pieces the Sky . This album including/understanding of the resumptions of songs of the Beatles " For No One" and of Louvin Brothers " yew I Could Only Win Your Love" , its first Hit.
It creates “The Hot Band”, with musicians of studio who had accompanied Elvis Presley: Glen D. Hardin, Hank DeVito and James Burton. They make a round together.
The following albums of Emmylou, Elite Hotel (1976), Luxury Liner (1977), and Quarter Moon in have Ten Hundred Town (1978) have all of success like albums of country music, but also near the music lovers rock'n'roll. Contrary to the other musicians of country, she does not hesitate to put rock'n'roll in her repertory.
She collaborates with many artists, as of 1979 with Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Neil Young on " Light off the Stable". She records regularly with these three artists, but also with Bob Dylan on her album Desire (1976) and with The Band for their album and film " The Last Waltz".
Quarter Moon in has Ten Hundred Town carried out in 1978 is one of its best discs. She is accompanied by “The Hot Band”, the guitarists Albert Lee and Rodney Crowell, Willie Nelson (duet on “One paper kid”) and also by The Band on " Leaving Louisiana in the broad daylight".
In 1979, it carries out a disc of country music Blue Kentucky Girl , then the following year a disc of music Bluegrass Roses in the Snow for which it had a Grammy award.
She continues to touch with different musical genres, with in 1980 " That Lovin' You Feelin' Again" recorded in company of the legend of the rock'n'roll Roy Orbison. Its duet to him been worth new Grammy award.
" Last date" is the recording of one in its concerts, it includes/understands several of its favorite songs, like " Grievous angel" and " Length may you run".
In 1983, it records White Shoes , always produced by Brian Ahern, with in particular a resumption of the hit " One the Radio".
Emmylou off composes all the songs of its autobiographical album The Balad Sally Pink (1985) which is based on its relations with Gram Parsons.
In 1987, it records Trio with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. This album is named for three Grammy awards and enters the ten best sales in the country categories and rock'n'roll.
In 1992, it has another Grammy with At the Ryman which it recorded with its new group “The Nash Ramblers”, the concerts made it possible to restore this auditorium.
Having less success with its country music, Emmylou changes repertory and records in 1995 Wrecking Ball with Daniel Lanois as producer. It is helped by artists rock'n'roll as Neil Young (which composed Wrecking Ball ) and Larry Mullen of U2. The following year, it takes part in the recording of the album Teatro of Willie Nelson, another production of Daniel Lanois.
In 1999, it records Red Dirt Girl , another album closer to the alternative rock'n'roll than of the country, with its own compositions, then a second album in trio with Parton and Ronstadt.
It takes part in the first album of Ryan Adams Heartbreaker (2000), and in the fifth of Tracy Chapman Telling stories then joined a group of musicians country, folk and blues for the music of film of the brothers Coen: O Brother, Where Art Thou? . Documentary was also carried out, it is entitled Down From The Mountain . In 2002, Emmylou carries out a round with this group of musicians.
Its following album Stumble Into Grace (2003) contains again mainly its own compositions.
In 2005, it takes part in the album I' m Wide Awake It' S Morning of the group Bright Eyes, then carries out a round with Elvis Costello.
2006 sees the singer of return with an album in duet with the singer and guitarist Mark Knopfler, the album is entitled All the roadrunning .
A world tour carried out in common with Knopfler (14 European dates and 9 North-American dates) took place enters at the end of May and at the end of June 2006.
The DVD of this round, recorded to Los Angeles, left in November 2006 and comprises CD in the same concert in its version collector.
Other activities
Since 1999, Emmylou Harris organizes an annual concert “Concerts for has Landmine Free World”. The benefit are intended to help the innocent victims of conflicts in the world and to inform the Americans on the dangers which the mines represent. Among the artists who helped it: Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Bruce Cockburn, Steve Earle, Joan Baez, Patty Griffin and Nanci Griffith.
