Emma Livry (of her true name Emma-Marie Emarot ) is a French dancer born with Paris the September 24th 1842 and deceased with Neuilly-sur-Seine the July 26th 1863.
Emma Livry is the pupil of the first large romantic dancer Marie Taglioni. Although it is physically not very beautiful, its qualities of dancer are very quickly noticed since it is committed with the Opéra of Paris in 1858 and that it will remain there until 1862. Emma Livry is certainly the last “romantic ballerina” of the time which saw being born this qualifier and which saw radiating great names of the romantic Ballet, such as Marie Taglioni, Fanny Cerrito, Fanny Elssler or Carlotta Grisi. Its majestic interpretation of the Sylphid made of it the most appreciated dancer of the public of Paris of the time to the Opera of Paris.
Marie Taglioni if was impressed by her talent which it created her single ballet the Butterfly for Emma Livry in 1860.
The tragedy
The November 15th 1862 at the time of a repetition of the ballet the Dumb woman of Portici , Emma Livry inadvertently agitated her Tutu of gauze above the lighting harrow. This one ignited and fire wrapped it very quickly. Thrown into a panic, it crossed three times the scene before a fireman has time to precipitate on it. Realizing that it was going to be naked, Emma Livry collected her hands the pieces of the fabric ignited to cover itself some, worsening of this fact her burns. What remained of its costume was due to the hollow of its hand. She died after 8 months of a long anguish, carrying with her one time which will have marked the history of the romantic Ballet. She was old only 21 years. One cannot avoid thinking of the identical death of the dancer Clara Webster when one thinks of this terrible accident.Part of its belt and a scrap of fabric are preserved in the windows of the Museum of the Opera.
The scenic lighting of the time was obviously not electric. The artists were to then sprinkle the costumes of a nonflammable product to prevent the accidents. The dancers preferred however not to it to resort because the product faded white fabrics of the tutu, conferring a not very esthetic yellowish color to him.
