Hydrology

Its especially rain food, explains the changes of its flow, the brutal Crue S of autumn or springs which can take, sometimes, a catastrophic character.

The flow of the Batch was observed over one 64 years period (1937-2000), with Villeneuve-sur-Lot, city of the Département of Lot-et-Garonne, located at little distance from its confluence with the Garonne. The catchment area of the river is of 10  700 km ² at this place (on 11  254).

Interannual medium flow or module of the river in Villeneuve-sur-Lot east of 151 m ³ a second.

The Batch present of the seasonal fluctuations of flow very important, with risings of winter-spring, carrying the average flow monthly located between 200 and 290 m ³ a second, of at the end of November with the beginning of May included, with a maximum in February, and low waters of summer, July to September, with a fall of the monthly medium flow up to the level of 32,5 m ³ in August, which remains in spite of very comfortable.

The VCN3 can however fall until 6,4 m ³, in the event of dry period quinquennial, which is extremely low. The VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.

In addition the risings can be violent. Indeed, the recorded maximum daily output was of 2  450 m ³ a second on December 4th, 1976. The QIX 10, or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 2  000 m ³ a second, are four times that of the Marne at the end of the course. As for the QIX 50, it goes up to 2  800 m ³, nearly three times more than that of the Yonne to its confluence, river however famous for its excesses (see note).

As comparison, let us recall that the QIX 10 of the Bridge-Holy-Maxence Oise with close to Paris, in the final part of its course, is worth 560 m ³ a second, while its QIX 50 is of 750 m ³. One can thus notice that the QIX 10 as the QIX 50 of the Batch is nearly four times superiors.

The Lame of water past in the basin of the Batch is of 446 millimetres annually, which is rather high, higher than the overall average of France, like the whole of the rivers resulting from the French Massif Central. The specific Débit (or Qsp) is assembled at 14,1 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin, a little less than its neighbor the Tarn (15,1).

River navigation

Was navigable of Entraygues-on-Truyère (Aveyron) to the confluence of the Batch and the Truyère to the Garonne with Nicole, then a long time navigable of Cahors to Aiguillon for rejoidre the the Garonne and the Canal of the Garonne in order to bring the richnesses of back country towards Bordeaux.
