Emmaüs France

Emmaüs France , is a Association law 1901 created in 1985 which gathers the whole of French associations members of Emmaüs International. Since January 2003, the concern of reinforcing coherence in the action and of taking into account the great diversity of its forms of intervention led Emmaüs France to be organized in three branches:

The Community branch

The communities, today 120, are the central project of the movement. The Communities are places of reception, life, work and solidarity which function only thanks to the activity of recovery of the Compagnons of Emmaüs, people excluded accommodated from way " inconditionnelle" for one unlimited duration. These communities have an marketing activity which consists in receiving the gifts of the private individuals (movable, clothing, curios, bicycles, etc), to if need be give them in state and to resell them at a price relatively low. The communities accommodate today nearly 3.880 companions. They are self-sufficing and do not receive any subsidies of operation.

The various communities are gathered today in seven federations. These federations have each one their mode of organization and operation. However, the reform of the movement in the course of advance envisages their progressive disappearance:

  • the UCC, Central Union of the Communities Emmaüs, created in 1958
  • the UACE, Union of the Friends and the Companions of Emmaüs
  • Fraternity
  • Division
  • Freedom
  • Nord/Pas-de-Calais Area
  • Reception and Vie

The branch Social action and housing

The social action and Housing represent one of the three branches of activity of Emmaüs France. It joins together organizations of which the goal is the proposal for solutions complementary and innovating with the people in difficulty.

The social action

The Association Emmaüs is the principal branch of the movement concerning the social action in Paris. It implements very diversified actions, managed by devices financed to some extent by public authorities (DDASS, CPAM, CIF, General advice, DDE):

  • the reception of day with a range of services (domiciliation, food aid, administrative, etc)
  • social lodging urgently and reception of night
  • the provision of transitory residences (3 to 24 months)
  • elimination of illiteracy and the fight against illiteracy
  • social accompaniment to profit from all its rights (RMI, formations, etc)
  • accompaniment of the families within the framework of the prevention of the over-indebtedness and expulsion by the free loan (S.O.S Families).

Housing

Since its creation, housing represents an essential dimension of the Movement of which the goal is the assistance with the people in course of insertion or without residence. The actions of solidarity are carried out by the Fondation Abbé Pierre, the Roofs of the Hope and Emmaüs Habitat:

  • the reception of day (Shops Solidarity)
  • construction, the rehabilitation, boarding houses
  • requalification urban
  • the development and patrimonial maintenance
  • financing of construction project and rehabilitation abroad.

The interdependent branch Economy and Insertion

The structures of the interdependent branch Economy and insertion, in their diversity, use the economic activity like a support of social and professional integration, as well as a vector of solidarity. This branch gathers structures of insertion, the committees of friends (associations the voluntary ones functioning on the same type of activity as the communities, and transferring their benefit with solidarity), and the Relays, corporate network to socio-economic goal adhering to Emmaüs France since May 2003.

Through their activities of recovery, recycling and sale, these structures take an action of social and professional integration by employing people in difficulty, excluded hitherto from the work world.

Beyond these actions of insertion, they devote part of their resources to projects of solidarity (5% of their turnover for the year 2002). It is for example of family assistance, support for local associations, financing of projects, assistance at the time of national catastrophes (AZF, floods), of preparation and the financing of containers for the foreigner, support for Emmaüs International or other international associations.
