Emilio Mola

Emilio Mola (June 9th 1887 - June 3rd 1937) was a Spanish general , initiator of the Coup d'etat of the July 17th 1936.

Biography

Emilio Mola was born in the Spanish colony from Cuba. In 1907, this wire of officer engages in the army of infantry of Tolède. Officer, it orders the regular troops Moors starting from 1919. In 1927, with old 40 years it is promoted brigadier general.

Experienced tactician, Emilio Mola is a charismatic, popular military chief near his men.

In 1930, it is named director of general safety where it orders the repression against the republican activists and of extreme-left.

Exiled to the military command of the Morocco during the second republic, he is recalled after the victory of the Spanish Popular front in February 1936 to be assigned with Pampelune as a military governor. But Mola already joined other Spanish officers secretly entreating to reverse the left government. Among those, the generals Francisco Franco, Juan Yague, Gonzalo Queipo de Llano and Jose Sanjurjo. Mola took the ascent on the group and became the chief about it.

After the inversion of the president Niceto Alcala Zamora and its replacement by a politician very on the left, Manual Azaña, the preparations of the conspiracy accelerate.

The June 5th 1936, Mola works out a first political project based on the disappearance of the Republic and the unit of Spain. It however has some concern to be combined the militia Carliste S of Navarre which require a return to a preserving monarchy.

The July 17th 1936, it is the coup d'etat but success is mitigated.

The July 18th 1936, Manuel Azaña names Diego Martinez Barrio at the post of Prime Minister in order to negotiate with the rebellious soldiers. Martinez Barrio contacted Mola and the post of minister of the war in the government offered to him but Mola refused very compromised. Following this failure, Azaña returned Martinez Barrio and replaced it by Jose Giral. This one distributed weapons to the militant organizations close to the government of the Popular front.

The July 19th 1936, the Mola general proclaimed the revolt of the Navarre which badly began with the death of the general Jose Sanjurjo in an air crash the July 20th 1936. The 23, it announce the creation of the Junta de Defensa Nacional.

The organization of military rising was not a general success except with the Canary islands, with the Morocco, Seville, in Aragon and Galicia.

At the end of the month of September 1936, nine generals members of the conspiracy joined that Mola was to yield its post of commander of the nationalist army to the Francisco Franco general whose troops carried the majority of victories. Mola accepted and was seen entrusting the command of the army of north.

Emilio Mola was killed the June 3rd 1937 in an air crash by bad weather. Rumors circulated on a possible calling into question of the Franco general in the death of Mola just like in that of Sanjurjo.
