Emile Waldteufel
Charles Emile Levy Waldteufel , known under the name of Emile Waldteufel , is a French type-setter born with Strasbourg the December 9th 1837 and died in Paris the February 12th 1915.
Biography
Charles Emile Waldteufel is resulting from a line of musicians whose founder was Moyse Levy, travelling musician with Bischheim (Alsace), which chooses the pseudonym of Waldteufel. One of its sons, Lazare Levy (1801-1884), alias Louis Waldteufel, pianist and professor of song had two wire, Isaac (1832-1884), known as Leon, who was a respected musician and Charles Emile, said Emile, who was most brilliant and talented artist of the line.
In 1844, its family gains Paris so that Leon can learn the Violon with the Conservatoire. In its turn, of 1853 to 1857, Emile is registered there to study the Piano; Jules Massenet and Georges Bizet is his classmates there. All works of Waldteufel will be made up with the piano before being orchestrated.
During the Second Empire, written Waldteufel of many dances which make known it. In 1865, particularly appreciated by Eugenie, he becomes director of the music of dance of the imperial court of Napoleon III and appointed pianist of the empress. It is charged to organize the famous dances of Biarritz and Compiegne. Starting from 1867, the orchestra of Waldteufel animates the balls with the Tuileries, then those of the Elysium after the war free-Prussian.
In 1874, he is noticed by the Prince of Wales, the future Edouard VII, which proposes to him to make known it in Great Britain. A contract with the company of London edition follows Hopwood & Crew which enables him to be played at the time of the balls of the Reine Victoria with Buckingham Palace. Its music dominates the programs during several years there. The Valse of the skaters (1882) is worth an international repute to him, and he from now on is played in London, Berlin and Paris successfully until the XXe century.
The music of Waldteufel, musician pleasant and equipped with the direction of humor, is characterized by lightness and the charm. Its abundant work comprises primarily music of dance: Waltz S, Hammer S, as of the melodies which became extremely popular, making of him the “Strauss French”. The use of Love and Printemps like the code of the television French broadcast Ciné club allowed its redécouverte at the end of the 20th century.
Emile Waldteufel is buried with the Cimetière of the Father-Lachaise in Paris.
