Emile Meyerson (born the February 12th 1859 with Lublin, in Poland, dead the December 2nd 1933) is a philosopher French of Russian origin . Against the current of thought Positiviste of the end of the 19th century, it develops a epistemology Réaliste founded on the identity principle. Meyerson died in its sleep of a Heart attack at 74 years.

Against positivism

The epistemology of Emile Meyerson is opposed to the positivism developed at the XIXe century by Auguste Count. Meyerson reproaches him for promoting a primarily descriptive science, which is limited to the statement of scientific laws, and gives up including/understanding nature even things.

The identity principle

Contrary, Meyerson thinks that science does not function like that: the scientist seeks before a a whole explanation to the phenomena by the means of the concept of causality. To return to this concept its eminent place in science of its time, Meyerson carries out an analysis of the principles of inertia and conservation, which tend all to establish in nature a form of identity of the cause and effect.

For Meyerson, this movement of homogenization in the middle of is very thought, and in extreme cases, is the condition. The human reason thus meets obstacles with its manner intimates to function: temporality, concept of irreversibility in general.

A realistic epistemology

In spite of these difficulties, successes of science show that this one exceeds the convenient statute of convention that the positivists want to assign to him: it is of nature even reality that it is question in the principles of conservation, which remain the only fundamental ideas of sciences. This vision of the walk of science makes of Emile Meyerson realistic that one can bring closer to his famous Bergson contemporary.
