Emile Mauchamp
Emile Mauchamp (born the March 3rd 1870 with Châlon-sur-saône, Saône-et-Loire - died the March 19th 1907 with Marrakech, Morocco) was a French doctor, who was assassinated with Marrakech, close to the dispensary where he exerted.
Emile Mauchamp was the son of a politician, who was general adviser of Châlon-sur-saône. After studies with the college, it left to Paris to study medicine. Appointed maritime medical doctor, he exerted in many countries: the Portugal, the Brazil, the Italy, the Greece, the Russia, current the Turkey. After a passage to Jerusalem, it was named with the Morocco by decree of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs to direct there a dispensary, created in 1905, with Marrakech.
It found there death the March 19th 1907, assassinated - at the age of thirty-seven years - several stabs, very close to the dispensary where it looked after children. Did Doctor Emile Mauchamp have activities of secret agent as some claimed? The population, appears it, seemed to show this doctor of “Christian, underhand and harmful aimings”. The Morocco, then, was not yet French protectorate. Emile Mauchamp, small doctor, was entitled to national funeral and one decreed to him the medal of the Legion of honor on a purely posthumous basis.
The April 11th 1907, an huge crowd attended her funerals in the presence of many personalities, in particular that of the Foreign Minister. Arrived in station of Chalon-sur-Saône at nine hours, covered with the Tricolor, its coffin, exposed on a catafalque, is installed in front of the town hall. Not less than seven speeches will be marked. Then the procession moved towards the cemetery of the East, the tradesmen having lowered their curtains. The burial took place in the family intimacy but Chalonnais then had the possibility of paying a last homage to him.
In the Chabas public garden, a monument perpetuates the memory of Doctor Emile Mauchamp. Work of the sculptor tournusien Pierre Curillon, this monument, inaugurated the August 21st 1910, “is mutilated today”. Indeed, at the time of the Second world war, the German soldiers concealed the statue bronzes some which decorated it: a Moroccan woman tightening her child towards the good doctor. A street of Châlon-sur-saône located towards the old prison always bears its name.
