Emile Francqui

Lucien-Joseph Emile Francqui , born with Brussels on June 25th, 1863 and died in Overijse on November 1st, 1935, is an officer, explorer, diplomat and Belgian statesman.

Biography

He is the son of Pierre-Joseph-Jules, solicitor and civic guard of Brussels, and Adolphine-Marie-Josèphe Tilquin, relationship of the famous Namurian painter Félicien Rops. The brother of its father, Jean-Baptiste Francqui (1835-1871), doctor in Chemistry, professor, was vice-chancellor of the Universit3e libre de Bruxelles.

He engages like pupil of the army on January 25th, 1878. He is fourteen years old. He is incorporated in the 7th regiment of Line as a soldier. A tough legend claims that it engaged orphan of father and mother. It seems that he was itself at the origin of this legend. In fact his/her father, ruined by the real estate speculation around the current Brugmann avenue in Uccle, died in 1881.

Francqui is promoted second lieutenant in 1884, lieutenant in 1889 and is reached the rank of captain in 1896. Twice, it is detached at the military cartographic Institute, i.e. placed at the disposal of the king Léopold II: from April 1885 in July 1889 and April 1891 in September 1896. Between these two brackets, he is instructor at the military royal School, where he has as raises prince Albert of Belgium, nephew of the king, the future Albert Ier.
