Emile Faguet

Auguste Emile Faguet , born the December 17th 1847 with the Roche-sur-Yon and dead the June 7th 1916 with Paris, is a French writer and literary critic.

Biography

His/her father Victor Faguet had been professor with Poitiers. He had translated into worms the tragedies of Sophocle and had composed several collections of poems, of which a chronicle the Vendée of towards, Béatrix of Fontenelles .

After having begun his studies in Poitiers, Emile Faguet continues them with the Lycée Charlemagne in Paris and between with the National university in 1867. He is named professor in Poitiers, then sign successively with La Rochelle, Bordeaux and Moulins. Become aggregate of letters, he teaches rhetoric with Clermont-Ferrand, receives the rank of arts doctor in 1883 and finds the Charlemagne college. From there, it passes to the Lycée Condorcet then to Janson-with-Sailly where it exerts until in 1896. Chosen as substitute with the Faculty of Arts for the Sorbonne, with the pulpit of French poetry, he becomes the holder in about it 1897 and, on February 15th 1900, he is elected member of the French Academy with the armchair of the novelist Victor Cherbuliez.

It Marie in 1916 with Suzanne Travichon, without posterity. He dies in 1916 and is buried with the Cimetière Montparnasse.

Literary career

He wrote a considerable number of works which formed of the whole generations of students. Very scholar, writer full with liveliness, with free pace, he was brilliant chronicler in turn and critical subtle, was interested especially in the ideas and its work Politiques and moralists of the 19th century revealed it like a fine psychologist.

He published on the literature: literary Studies on XVIe, XVIIe, XVIIIe and XIXe centuries , History of the French literature , History of French poetry (of the Rebirth to the romanticism) , Notes on the contemporary theater , and wrote many studies of criticism on Corneille, the Fountain, André Chénier, Voltaire, Gustave Flaubert, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Nietzsche, Honore de Balzac.

He is also the author of many political works: political Problems of time present , the Anticlericalism , the Worship of the incompetence , the Socialism , the Pacifism , the Feminism , the Liberalism , Political questions, the compared Political of Voltaire, Rousseau and Montesquieu , as well as philosophical works: For reading Plato , By reading Nietzsche , the social Work of the French revolution .

Author of teaching works like simple Simplification of the orthography , the Art of reading , By reading the beautiful books , literary Initiation , it composed, in his youth, of poetries.
