Emile Courtet

Emile Courtet , known as Emile Cohl (1857 - 1938), is a Dessin stimulating ator and French, born with Paris the January 4th 1857, and died with Villejuif the January 20th 1938. Regarded as the inventor of the cinematographic Cartoon . He was the pupil of the caricaturist André Gill.

The Cinema of animation

It created oldest Cartoon on film of cinema known to date, Fantasmagorie , which was projected for the first time the August 17th 1908, with the theater of the Gymnasium in Paris, for the company Gaumont. It is however important to note that Emile Reynaud projected cartoons of more than 500 images, on the optical Théâtre, a system close to the projector of cinema, as of the October 28th 1892.

Of 1908 with 1923, Emile Courtet realized more than two hundred cartoon films. It also made Théâtre, Photographie, illustration of books, and much of other things.

Emile Courtet worked like independent, then for the cinematographic companies Frenchwoman Lux, Gaumont, Pathé, Eclipse, Éclair for which it worked with Fort Lee with the the United States of 1912 with 1914 as director of animation.

Its name was given to a disctinction which rewards each year a cartoon film: the Price Emile Cohl.

Life of Emile Courtet

He was married with Marie Louise Servat (known as Germaine), who had a relation since 1886 with Henry Gauthier-Villars says Willy or Maugis which will be later the husband of Colette.

He attended the cabarets of the black Chat, close to Pigalle and of the Nimble Lapin (or to Gill, with Montmartre), belonged to the two artistic groups Hydropathes and Incohérent S, and attended many writers like Victor Hugo or Verlaine. It also met many scenario writers like Georges Méliès, of which it was one of the most faithful friends, or Sacha Guitry.
