Emile - Antoine Bayard , born with the Ferté-sous-Jouarre the November 2nd 1837 and died in the Cairo in December 1891, is a painter, decorator, draftsman and illustrator French.

Raise Leon Cogniet, contemporary of Gustave Doré, it begins its career early and exposes portraits and studies of horses to the charcoal between 1853 and 1861. Its talent is put regularly at contribution to illustrate newspapers and periodicals such as the Newspaper of youth , the Round the world tour , the Illustration , the Newspaper to laugh and the Newspaper of the voyages .

The editor Louis Hachette appreciates it and calls often upon him to illustrate his works, in particular those of the pink Bibliothèque . He illustrates thus the the Poor wretches of Victor Hugo, Uncle Tom's cabin of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Immortal the of Alphonse Daudet, Of the Earth to the Moon of Jules Verne.

He also carries out compositions for beautiful editions of novels as well as tables, charcoals and drawings on the war of 1870, such as the allegorical part of Sedan (1870}, which had many success, paintings of battle ( After the Bataille of Waterloo , (1875), of the scenes of kind ( a Duel of women , an Affair of honor ), portraits ( Portrait of the Commander Franchetti , Portrait of the colonel de Montbrison ) and finally of decorative paintings in the manner of the 18th century as those which decorate the hearth with the Théâtre of Palais Royal in Paris. But they are especially its drawings for the leading orders which hold the attention of the amateurs today. Without being as daring as Paul Gavarni, Emile Bayard could harmonize the gestures with the expressions of the faces, thus making his characters particularly expressive.
