Emile Basly

Emile Basly was born the March 29th 1854 with Valencian. He died the February 11th 1928 with Lens With Arthur Lamendin, it is one of the great figures of the Syndicalisme in the Field of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Biography

As of the twelve years age it is engaged like “galibot” (young person minor), but is returned following a strike in 1880. It then holds a coffee, the Pub with Anzin, which becomes the meeting room of the minors. Thus he becomes then secretary of the Syndicat Mineurs of Anzin to his creation in 1882, then president in 1891.

He illustrates in particular during the Grève of 1884 and will be called: the untameable minor or the tsar of Lens . Emile Zola meets it on this occasion and is inspired some for the character by Etienne Lantier in his novel Germinal .

He is appointed of Paris of 1885 with 1889 then Pas-de-Calais of 1891 with 1928 in the district of Lens - Liévin.

He was Maire of Lens starting from 1900 and remained it until its death. It devoted the ten last years of its life to the rebuilding of the city, completely destroyed at the time of the First World War.
