Emil Guilels

Emil Grigorievitch Guilels (in), born the October 19th 1916 with Odessa, dead the October 14th 1985, with Moscow, was a Soviet Pianiste .

Biography

He starts to study the Piano at the 6 years age in Odessa and gives its first concert to 13 years. In 1935, it studies with the academy of Moscow, where it follows in particular the teaching of Heinrich Neuhaus. In 1938, it gains the first price of the Concours Eugene-Ysaÿe with Brussels and becomes professor with the Conservatoire Tchaïkovski of Moscow starting from 1951. It is one of the rare Soviet artists having been able to make an official international career, with several recordings with the the United States.

It was characterized by a play with the very pure sound, a admirable Legato, an orchestral variety of stamps. Nevertheless, its vision of works remains of a rare coherence and an intelligence. Moreover, Chostakovitch said of him: “It combines at the same time a great freedom of interpreter and an absolute respect of the intentions of the type-setter. ”

Its repertory remains primarily romantic with the Concerto S and the Sonate S of Beethoven, Brahms or Schumann. It is also one of the largest interpreters of the Russian music (Prokofiev, Rachmaninov).
