Emerita

Emeritas ( Emerita sp. ) of the family of the Hippidae is named mole crabs (Crab-mole), sand fleas (sand flea), or sand crabs (crab of sand), or beach hoppers or lookie cookies in the United States and Canada. They should not be confused with shellfish also named sand flea (or louse of sea) in Europe which is much smaller. These marine animals, like crabs, belong to the order of the Decapode S, but they are classified in a sub-order (Anomura) whereas the true crabs are classified in the sub-order Brachyura).

Habitat:

This species appreciates the sandy funds of not very deep water of the littorals of North America and the South, side Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean. The crab-mole requires a water of good quality and does not support in particular the water polluted by oil, which can make of it a Bioindicateur or a sentinel of the environment.

Description

Lifespan: two to three years. Color: mimetic of the undulated sandy bottom, which seems to protect them from many predatory Poisson S and Oiseau X.

Food

The crab-moles live most of the time buried in sand, letting exceed only their antennas which filter water with the retreat of vagueness, enabling them to collect the organic plankton and remains of which they are nourished. They thus contribute to purify water. The crabs of mole also eat the Tentacule some Méduse S (Physalia ground cherry) which it rolls up around its legs.

Behavior and reproduction

In summer the females of 3,5 cm, larger than the males (2 cm) lay and protect their eggs (orange-clearly with yellowish) until the blossoming, under their Telson (body resembling a tail, folded up under their bodies).

Threats

The principal threats are the environment and water pollution, and locally its use as soft food for fishing.
