Embarcadero

The dynasty of the Daum Frères starts in glass with Jean Daum (1825 - 1885), notary with Bitche which, following the Guerre of 1870, chose France and sold its study. It reinvested its funds in the Verrerie of Nancy in the city of the same name.

In front of the bad financial health of the glassmaking, Auguste Daum (1853 - 1909), which followed a training of lawyer, sees itself obliged to take the head of it, after it was repurchased to save it bankruptcy.

He entrusts in 1891 to his brother Antonin (1864 - 1930), at his exit of the Central École, the department of art and gives him all the means of working to follow the wake dug by Emile Galle in the glassmaking Art nouveau.

The workshops of Daum formed some of the great names of the Art nouveau like Jacques Gruber, the painter who returns to Nancy in 1894, Almaric Walter in 1904 to develop molten glasses, Henri Bergé, which is Master decorator there, the brothers Schneider who make their beginnings there, Eugene Gall, the son of one of the glassmakers.

Antonin begins in 1891 with some simple models to continue quickly with engraving with the Acide then while passing to models using the techniques of engraving to the wheel, of glasses with two or three layers. Of 1890 with 1914, it does not create less than three thousand references. Under the impulse of Emile Galle, they belong to the mobility which creates the École of Nancy whose Antonin Daum becomes vice-president. He is one of the personalities of the chamber of commerce of Nancy. He plays a big role during the international exhibition of the East of France in 1909.

He ensures, after 1918, the adaptation of the company to the new conditions of production, concerned to maintain there esthetic qualities, technical and orientations more than utility.

It is only in the years 1920 that Paul, one of wire of Auguste, directs the production towards the Art déco in front of the loss of interest of the public for the Art nouveau.

His/her children and grandchildren continue this work until the years 1990.

The Cristallerie always exists and its Production is internationally known.

Leon Daum, wire of Auguste Daum and son-in-law of Henri Poincaré, was one of the founders of ECSC.
