Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau (February 17th 1820 - April 12th 1898) was the archbishop of Quebec and the first cardinal born in Canada.

It made brilliant studies with the Petit seminar of Quebec of 1826 with 1836 and of 1837 with 1842. In 1856, it obtained a Doctorat in right gun to Rome for then becoming professor, prefect, director of studies and superior of the Séminaire of Quebec.

In 1852, it helped to found the Université Laval. Pie IX appointed it archbishop the December 24th 1870 and it accepted its episcopal dedication of Mgr John Joseph Lynch in company of Mgr John Horan and Charles Rocque.

When came time to name a cardinal, several suggested its name with the pope Leon XIII in 1886. It could not exert its new functions during very a long time because soon it fell sick and died the April 12th 1898. Louis-Nazaire Bégin was named to succeed to him.

It should be noted that Mgr Thomas Weld was created cardinal in 1830; with the difference of Taschereau, it had been born out of Canada, in the United Kingdom.
