Elwood Curtin Zimmermann is a American Entomologiste , born the December 8th 1912 with Spokane, Washington and dead the June 18th 2004.

It is employed by Pacific Entomological Survey in 1930 and continues its studies with Berkeley. Those are stopped in 1932, because its increasing reputation, make it choose as entomologist for an organized forwarding the Muséum Bishop of Hawaii. This one led by Charles Montague Cooke (1849-1909) visit about fifty islands of the Polynesia. After having obtained its diplomas (Master off Arts and Bachelor off Sciences) in 1934, it enters naturally to the Bishop natural history museum where it starts to work on the work of its life: a series of books devoted to the insects of the archipelago hawaiien. In 1936 - 1937 and in 1940 - 1941, it gives courses to the university of Hawaii.

In 1941, it Marie with Louise Jump. In 1946, it becomes preserving in entomology and, in 1948, Zimmermann start to make off appear the first five volumes of Insects Hawaii . For the preparation of this series, it spends much time to London to the Natural History Museum of London where it becomes associate honorary. He is member of the United States National Research Council of 1954 with 1956, in 1958, 1966 - 1967 and of 1969 with 1973.

For its work, it receives a DIC Imperial College and a pH. D. of the University of London in 1956. In 1980, it will be also honoured by receiving a Doctorat off Sciences.

In 1957 - 1958, it makes off appear three new volumes with its Insects Hawaii but of the financial and administrative constraints oblige it to delay the publication of the ninth volume in 1978. In 1972, it decides to give up the island of Hawaii to leave for Australia where, with the support of Douglas Frew Waterhouse (1916-2000), director of CSIRO, it projects to study the Australian Curculionoidea extensively. In 1986, whereas it is 74 years old, Zimmermann writes that it works all the time, never not taking holidays, not stopping even Sunday or for the Christmas Day.

The Zimmermanns and his wife contribute themselves with the sum 100.000 $, with part of the financing of the publication Australian Weevils . Those appear of 1991 with 1994, except for the fourth volume which to appear in 2004, representing nearly 3.700 pages in six volumes including two of boards color. It makes appear during its life 225 scientific publications. Member of very many learned societies, whose American Association for the Advancement off Science, Entomological Society off America, Australian Entomological Society and well of others, it receives many medals and distinctions, of which Order off Australia (AM).
