Elsa Triplet , born Elsa Kagan , is a writer E and resistant E French of Russian origin born the September 12th 1896 with Moscow, deceased the June 16th 1970 with Saint-Arnoult-in-Yvelines.

Biography

Of its true name Ella Kagan (then Triplet of its first husband whom it will keep all his life), it is girl of Elena Youlevna Berman (musician) and of the Jewish lawyer Youri Alexandrovitch Kagan. It has as a named sister Lili of which it is very jealous but that it admires at the same time. Lili will join in 1905 the Russian revolution and it is by it that Elsa and Aragon will have contact communist. It is the friend of childhood of the Linguiste Roman Jakobson, very early learns the French and binds in 1913 with the Poète Futuriste Vladimir Maïakovski, which will become then the companion of its sister, Lili Brik. In 1918, it leaves the Russia and in 1919, it marries André Triolet, a French officer, with Paris with which it leaves for Tahiti during 3 years. It is there that she will write her first works. Years by years, it will undergo a depression related to the climate. Indeed, it cannot feel well that in its country and therefore it will turn over a few years after to Europe. It leaves her husband in 1921, it is in this period that it will know a time of wandering while going to Paris, Berlin but also Moscow and will vivera then with London and Berlin. She writes several novels in Russian, In Tahiti (published in 1925 and inspired of its stay in Tahiti in 1919), Strawberry-of-Wood (1926), Camouflage (1928). Let us notice that these works have for much a set of themes of wandering in relation at its years 1921 to 1928. It is a woman who life in a loneliness although she is married and surrounded per many people.

Installed with Montparnasse in 1924, she attends writer S surrealist S and Artiste S like Fernand Leger and Marcel Duchamp.

She meets Louis Aragon in 1928 with Paris, the coffee the Cupola , attended per many artists, and becomes her MUSE. In the the Thirties, it draws collars for the Haute couture and written reports for Russian newspapers; it also translates Russian and French authors. It starts to write a first novel in French, Good evening, Therese , in 1938.

It Marie with Aragon on February 28th, 1939. She enters with him the Résistance, the Southern Zone (with Lyon and in the Drome in particular) and contributes to make appear and to diffuse the newspapers Drome of weapons and the Stars . She continues to write: the novel the white Horse and of the news published in the Editions of Midnight. Joined together under title First tear costs two hundred francs (sentence which announced the Débarquement in Provence), this news obtains the Prix Goncourt 1945 with the title of the year 1944. It attends into 1946 the Procès of Nuremberg on which it writes a report in the French Letters .

Belonging to the management committee of the National committee of the writers (CNE), it attempts to promote the Lecture and the sale of books in the Fifties. The period of the war inspires to the novel the Inspector of the ruins to him, then the atomic threat, at the time of the Cold war, the russet-red Horse . She travels much in the socialist countries with Aragon, but, if she is aware of the Antisémitisme which reaches his/her sister and of the crimes which are committed in Soviet Union (the companion of Lili Brik, the general Primakov, is carried out), she does not make any public statement on these events. It expresses its critic of the Stalinisme only in 1957 in the Monument . She resigns the same year of the management committee of the CNE then written the three novels of the cycle the Nylon Age. She intervenes actively in 1963 to translate and to appear in France the novel of Alexandre Soljénitsyne One day of Ivan Denissovitch . The way in which the Biographie of Vladimir Maïakovski was falsified in Soviet Union is one of the reasons which involves it to write the novels Large Never the (1965) and Listen to-to see (1968).

After having published the Setting in words (collection Paths of Creation , Skira editions, 1969) and the Nightingale is keep silent at dawn (1970), Elsa Triolet dies of an mild heart attack on June 16th, 1970 in the property which it has with Aragon, the Moulin of Villeneuve. She rests in the park of six hectares surrounding this old mill at the sides of Aragon. On their tombs one can read this sentence of Elsa Triolet: “When side by side we are finally Gisant S, the alliance of our books will for better and for worse join together us in this future which was our dream and our major concern, with you and me. ”
