Elmina

Elmina , on the Ghanaian coast is today a small fishing port of 20.000 inhabitants resulting from the first European counter of the Gulf of Guinea. The forts Saint-Georges and Saint-Jacob point out the seniority of the European establishment and the roughness of the fights in what was one of the greatest African centers of the treats slaves.

The first counter, strong Saint-George, was rested by Portuguese sailors in 1482 and remained the head of bridge of Portugal in West Africa, until its capture by the Compagnie Dutchwoman of the Western Indies into 1637 which fact of building a strong second, strong Saint-Jacob or Saint-Jago in 1666.

17th century at the beginning of the 19th century, the draft of the slaves makes the fortune of the city.

In 1872, Elmina is yielded to the Britanniques.

Its lagoon is an active fishing port today.
