Elliott Casing

Elliott Carter (December 11th 1908 with New York, the United States) is a American Compositeur.

He studies the English literature and the music with the Université of Harvard.

He works with the Teacher training school of music of Paris (1932 - 1935) with Nadia Boulanger, then becomes teaching, in particular with the Columbia University and the Juilliard School off Music.

In the Years 1930, Carter approaches the neo-classic style , under the influence of Stravinski, Hindemith and Nadia Boulanger. It is only at the end of the Années 1940 that he manages to find his own language, founded on the direction of continuity and the individualization of the various layers of the composition.

Writing a demanding music, far from the américanisant style of a Copland or a Bernstein, but far also from the serial experiment , Carter built its work in a great mind of independence.

Its meeting with the American type-setter Charles Ives was very important. Indeed, it is Ives which pushed it to be a type-setter.

He carried out a synthesis between the various tendencies of the music of the 20th century and between musical designs belonging to times or very different cultures. The most famous orchestras and the largest soloists, just as of many units, ordered partitions to him.

Works

  • Canonic Continuation (1939): early work considered as belonging to the neo-classic period of Casing.

  • Eight Parts for drinking cups (1949-1966): the majority of these parts use the idea of " modulation of tempo" also called " modulation métrique". Six of these parts were written in 1949. It is about Saëta, Moto perpetuo, Récitatif, Improvisation, the Canaries and March. Canto and Adagio were written in 1966.
It is necessary to regard these parts anthology of parts for drinking cups, and not as 1une continuation. Casing recommends to choose four at the most of them to play them in concert.
