Ellen Allien

Ellen Allien , alias Ellen Fraatz , is a DJ and producing of Electronic music, more particularly of techno hypnotic, with the head of the label Bpitch Control.

Biography

Beginnings

Born in the years 1970, Ellen Fraatz starts as from 1992 a career of DJ in Germany (DJ resident in the clubs Bunker, Tresor and E-Werk). It becomes Ellen Allien. It animates an emission on the electronic musics into 94, KIS FM (Germany) for which it carries out interviews and retransmissions live of the evenings techno of the famous Trésor club to Berlin, and leaves its first EP Just Let The Groove Go .

Its label

It founds its own label Bpitch Control into 97 and makes the promotion of an electro-tech IDM (intelligent dance music) rather radical, always experimental, at the syncopated rates/rhythms, with the torn sonorities, engraved with the machines, supported by violent low Techno, almost an martial art… (broken happy). Since 2006, its music and its label took a turning definitely minimal and trancy, but always hypnotic.

Of Stadtkind to the Bubbles

It leaves its first album Stadtkind in 2001 (in French the child of the city) then the following year a opus remixes on Bpitch Control: Remix Collection . It remixe in particular Goldenboy Feat. Miss Kittin: Rippin Kittin . Miss Kittin and Ellen Allien being regarded as female alter ego for their personalities and their contribution with this musical current, in a strongly male medium more than.

She joins Apparat aka Sascha Ring Co-leader of the Shitkapult label, to leave its second album which will make date in 2003: Berlinette , in homage to Berlin, and reference to the car. Starting from the sounds developed by Autechre and Pageantry, and based on programs of algorythmes, Ellen Allien brings its personal key to the history of the Electro tendency IDM and to the Techno: an air and melody environment in particular by its voice become strange under the effect of the machines, as cut out and chopped by the rhythmic one it even. It thus leaves the IDM its abstract and élitiste statute rather confined to the rooms of Nerd S and to the solitary brains, to bring this musical genre towards a format closer to the " chanson" pop and to make him find the direction of the clubs.

Rising icon and from now on impossible to circumvent of the electro-tech scene, it leaves in world tour, while supporting the work of its promising recruits on its label by compilations Bpitch Control: Kiki and Silversurfer, Paul Kalkbrenner, Modeselektor, Sascha Funke, Smash TV…. Its services of DJ are famous to be ultra Techno, it says that it likes to push the sound to the extreme.

It remixe French OMR The Way We Have Chosen and reconsiders the front of the scene in 2005 with a new album: Thrills , which opens its music with an audience a little larger, beyond the medium strictly underground. Although this time the environment of its pieces is less pop, it always energetic, enough is abstracted, and refers to many currents, such as the old school.

Ellen Allien continues its work of goldsmith and sign of new artists (on its label or its compile) who continue his work of experimental and explosive déconstruction of the dance music, of which French DJ Feadz, DJ Koze, Housemeister. In the evolution of its label, it signs The MFA, rising value of the new progressive house influenced by the big happy of the years 1990, and the acid trance, group noticed on the label of James Holden. Indeed Bpitch Control is close to the British label Border Community: The MFA remixe Ellen Allien, then Pageantry remixe Nathan Fake, and Fairmont is regularly invited on Bpitch compilations… the summer 2005, it confirms this new minimal tendency house and tech by creating a under-label Memo Musik, on which it signs Ben Klock (who is already Bpitch artist), and Zander VT.

In 2006, Ellen Allien finds Apparat aka Sascha Ring for a new album: Orchestrated Bubbles off, and a first EP: Turbo Dreams , remixé in a minimal style techno by Marc Swells of the Minus label of Richie Hawtin, and a minimal style house by Pier Bucci of Crosstown Rebels. The environment of this album opens the discography of Ellen Allien towards an atmosphere much air, minimal trancy, supported by very worked arrangements and genuine string instruments. The second EP Jet will be remixé by The MFA and Ben Klock.

While its artist Bpitch Control, Sascha Funke, leaves one compiles chatoyante, in the vein deep minimal house: Boogie Bytes Flight 2 , on which one finds Ricardo Villalobos, Schatrax, Trentemoller, Fairmont, Louderbach aka Troy Pierce, Ellen Allien takes again the way of the rounds with Apparat and part of its label: the evenings take place in particular in warehouses which point out the places of turnip, and are entitled quite simply: We Love Ellen .

Also let us note that it signs on its label French Paul Nazca for a hypnotic EP deep house, entitled: Nice To Be Young stag . This same year, Ellen Allien collaborates in particular with the prince of minimal the tech: Vacuum-tube (Spectral label) aka Matthew Dear, and diversifies its activities while launching a line of clothing and preparing the edition of a DVD on Berlin The Other Side Of Berlin , to appear on April 28th, 2007.

In 2007, it leaves the EP Tomas Andersson made up of two titles imparables: Word Matsalen! and Dubbel Problematik ; then Happy In Grey , the first album of its close relation collaborator Marit Posh under the pseudo Damero which describes its own music under the qualifier: “Dance Music for armchair”.

Ellen Allien also prepares with remixer Troy Pierce, Beck, and Thom Yorke, and with launching the new compilation of its label Bpitch Control: Bpitch Control Camp-site 3, Compiled By Ellen Allien , made up of exclusivenesses - including one new track with Pageantry: Red Planets , and a remix for Safety Scissors: Where Is Germany And How C I Get There? (Ellen Allien Germany Remix) , followed by a round: the Camp-site Turn.
